Multi-Team Exercises

Overview

These exercises help students learn how to take a design and make a part from it. Typically there are some difficulties that arise in the transformation from a CAD drawing to a real physical part.

Exercise 1 (Handle End Cap)

Design and 3D Print an end cap that connects a 2" round tube (1/16" wall thickness) to a 1" square tube (1/8" wall thickness) something like is shown below. Get sample pieces of the round and square tube to work with.

GOALS:

  1. Learn about tolerances and fitting parts together.

  2. Think about fasteners, how they will attach, and the correct hole sizes for them.
QUESTIONS:

  1. What does the fastener thread into?

  2. How does the end cap stay in the 2" round tube or does it? Does it need to?
